2004 Dutschke Willow Bend

90 Points Robert Parker  Wine Advocate  10/06:

Wayne Dutschke, who began his winemaking career at Yalumba, fashions some impressive cuvees under the Dutschke label. One of his most intriguing offerings is the single vineyard blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Merlot called Willow Bend. The 2004 is a beautifully made wine that was aged in a combination of American and French wood. Full-bodied and elegant, it offers sweet black raspberry fruit, mocha, and cocoa notes, soft tannin, and low acidity. This delicious, fleshy, exuberant, sexy, dry red should drink well for 5-6 years.

Lost Highway Project

"Stella's Garden" Shiraz

93 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate 10/05

There are only 500 cases of this singularly-styled, inky/purple Shiraz. Its projected nose of ripe figs, blackberries, chocolate, and espresso roast is followed by a full-bodied wine with superb fruit intensity and purity as well as a long, concentrated finish with ripe tannin. Consume it over the next 12-15 years

Marquis Philips

Cabernet Sauvignon

90 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate 10/05

The classic 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon offers tell-tale aromas and flavors of black currants, high class cigar smoke, and herbs. Medium to full-bodied with dense, layered fruit flavors, an attractive suppleness, and an easy-going style with admirable depth, it should drink well for 2-3 years. In short, they are hedonistic, fun wines to drink ... just what wines should be. And, when you consider their prices, they represent exceptional values. The 2002s were knock-outs, the 2003s, while good, were less successful, and the 2004s hit the bull’s eye once again.

Marquis Philips

Shiraz

90 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate 10/05

The 2004 Shiraz reveals blackberry, tar, pepper, and toasty oak characteristics in its spicy, rich, deep, voluptuous personality. It will drink well for 1-3 years. This partnership between Dan Philips and winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis (who will no longer be making these wines starting with the 2005 vintage) has been a blockbuster success in the American market.

Torbreck

Woodcutter's Red

91 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate 10/05

The 2004 Woodcutters Shiraz is a 20,000-case cuvee aged completely in old wood. Pure blackberry liqueur intermixed with hints of charcoal, tar, and pepper jump from the glass of this soft, velvety-textured, opulent, fruit-filled Shiraz. Amazingly complex for its price, this lusty, appealing, hedonist’s dream is worth buying by the case. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. David Powell, unquestionably one of the world’s finest wine producers, has an uncanny ability to discover old vine Barossa vineyards, and then secure long term contracts for their fruit. It is amazing that such high quality sources have not already been plucked by Australia’s giant wine corporations. Torbreck’s wines continue to get better and better, combining the old vine ripe fruit of Barossa with a European sensitivity to elegance and balance.
