2015 Barbera Scarrone

-Piedmont

Robert Parker

Score: 93 Points!

The 2015 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Vecchia Scarrone is a beautifully crafted and accessible wine made with fruit from a historic vineyard. Luca Currado opted not to make Barbera in the difficult 2014 vintage. This wine opens to immediate density and richness. It shows succulent aromas of blackberry, spice, tar and dark plum that build the wine's soaring aromatic profile. Earthy tones of forest floor and black truffle also appear. The mouthfeel is on the soft side (of the Barbera spectrum) and there is a playful point of sweetness as well!

2014 Nebbiolo Perbacco

-Piedmont

Robert Parker

Score: 91 Points!

The Vietti winery has 15 vineyard crus at its disposal now. This allows for enormous flexibility in winemaking. The 2014 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is an easy-drinking but sophisticated Nebbiolo that could pass for a base Barolo. This wine sees fruit sourced from Fiasco, Bussia, Fossati, Bricco delle Viole and Ravera di Monteforte. The bouquet delivers great intensity with an authentic display of dark fruit, spice and licorice!

Red berry, rose petal, white pepper and chopped herb are just some of the aromas you'll find on this. The bright full-bodied palate delivers crushed raspberry, dark cherry, star anise and tobacco alongside firm refined tannins and vibrant acidity. It's already tempting but will be even better with more bottle age. Drink 2021–2033!

2012 Barolo

Robert Parker

Score: 92+ Points!

This is a wine I highly recommend especially for those who can't resist the beautiful taste of Nebbiolo in a more informal dining scenario (like around the kitchen table with family and friends). The 2012 Barolo Lecinquevigne sees fruit sourced from five vineyard sites, and all that mixing and matching gives the winemakers more flexibility for achieving quality. For this reason, Lecinquevigne has shown impressive quality over the years. The wine is redolent of wild berry, cola, licorice and soft spice. Rating: 92+!

Wine Spectator

Score: 92 Points!

A firm, lean style, sporting cherry, licorice, mint, tobacco and tar flavors allied to dry, dusty tannins. Shows fine acidity and balance, with a long aftertaste of licorice, earth and tar. Best from 2019 through 2033!

Wine Enthusiast

Score: 91 Points!

Woodland berry, forest floor, blue flower, tobacco and a hint of leather come together in the glass. The chewy, accessible palate offers juicy wild cherry, fleshy raspberry, cake spice and star anise accompanied by velvety tannins!

Score: 92 Points!

Enticing aromas of rose, iris, berry and leather lift out of the glass. The firm, elegantly structured palate offers black cherry, star anise, clove and white pepper alongside youthfully assertive but refined tannins. Drink 2018–2023!

Wine Spectator

Score: 92 Points!

Floral top notes are grounded by cherry, strawberry and spice in this firm, wiry red. Shows all the components, just needs time to integrate fully. Fine length. Best from 2018 through 2028!

James Suckling

Score: 92 Points!

Pretty aromas of dried strawberry and orange peel. Medium body, pretty integrated tannins and a long finish. Drink or hold!

2014 Guardiola Etna Rosso

Wine Enthusiast

Score: 94 Points!

Enticing scents of wild red berry, baking spice, aromatic herb and a balsamic note waft out of the glass. The elegant, juicy palate doles out succulent wild cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and a note of white pepper while a mineral note backs up the finish. It's well balanced, with bright acidity and ultrafine tannins. !

James Suckling

Score: 93 Points!

Beautiful plum, peach and orange peel aromas and flavors. Full to medium body, fine tannins and a crisp finish. Precise and focused. New Etna wine from Cusumano. Drink or hold!

Robert Parker

Score: 91 Points!

This is the base red from the Cusumano brothers' Etna estate. The 2014 Etna Rosso (100% Nerello Mascalese) is tempered and elegant. It offers pretty ruby color saturation and bright aromatic intensity. The bouquet delivers wild berry, cassis, dry earth and tobacco. It is aged in large oak casks for just six months, so you really get a good taste of the fresh fruit at hand. Grapes are harvested and blended from three separate vineyards, Verzella, Pietramarina and Feudo di Mezzo. With 23,500 bottles produced, this is another recommended value buy!

2010 San Leonardo

-Trentino

Wine Advocate

Score: 95 Points!

San Leonardo was not produced in 2009. The 2010 San Leonardo (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot) is a seamless and polished wine that shows the best of this estate and this vintage. This is a profound and lasting wine with a bouquet that opens to dark fruit tones backed by spice, leather, tobacco and polished river stone. It tastes very young now but offers good material (in terms of richness, acidity and structure) to promise a steady aging evolution ahead. This edition of San Leonardo is gorgeous with a capital G!

Robert Parker
Score: 93 Points!

The 2012 Sammarco is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot. Like with the d'Alceo, this hot vintage does not deliver the same soaring intensity and complexity as seen in past years. It shows added softness and succulence instead. The bouquet is driven by sweet fruit and dried berry aromas that underline the warm vintage. Allspice, clove and more sweet fruit appear on the close!

Casanova di Neri
2012 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova

-Tuscany

James Suckling

Score: 96 Points!

Lots of spice, balsamic and ripe-fruit character to this one. Walnut undertones. Full to medium body, a compressed structure of ripe tannins and packed-in fruit. Vibrant finish!

Robert Parker

Score: 96 Points!

The Casanova di Neri 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a beautiful wine that recalls many of the stunning characteristics found in its high-scoring predecessor. I gave a perfect 100 points to the 2010 edition of this same wine. This expression, made two years later, continues in that tradition of excellence. The quality of fruit is profound and intense. The bouquet offers black cherry, spice, leather, balsam herb, cola and licorice. The complexity is absolutely impressive. The mouthfeel, however, is slightly thinner. The classic 2010 vintage is remembered for its twofold punch of elegance and power. Alternatively, the 2012 vintage shows aromatic intensity and less persistence on the finish, generally speaking. Having said that, this remains one Bellissimo Brunello!

Wine Spectator

Score: 94 Points!

Precise balance sets the stage for cherry, black currant, violet and tobacco flavors in this smooth, intense red. The tannins are present yet well-integrated and this persists with echoes of fruit and tobacco. Reveals an element of spice on the aftertaste. Best from 2020 through 2035!

Dalfornoa-ValpolicellaDal Forno Romano
2010 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta

-Veneto

Wine Advocate

Score: 95 Points!

The 2010 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta is more precise and focused compared to the 2011 edition that I tasted at the estate at the same time. This was not an easy vintage in Valpolicella compared to other parts of Italy that enjoyed a classic growing season. Instead, this Northern corner of Italy suffered from heavy rains and some hail damage. Overall yields were lower as a result. But the wine sings in terms of its brightness and aromatic intensity today. The expressive bouquet covers all the bases from black fruit to spice to drying mineral or flint. All of these elements conspire to bring robust flavors together with smooth and seamless transitions!

James Suckling

Score: 95 Points!

Amazing aromas of dried fruits, burnt orange and walnut skin. Full-bodied, chewy and very rich and dry, with wonderful tannin-fruit tension. It's layered, textured and complex. A triumph!

Wine Spectator

Score: 93 Points!

Leather, spice, violet and smoke aromas and flavors are an aromatic entry for this expressive red, wafting through notes of plumped black cherry, underbrush and smoky mineral. Firm and dense, but with an overall sense of finesse to the marriage of structure and flavor. Drink now through 2025. 900 cases imported!

Pressed rose, violet, forest floor, baked plum and cake spice aromas emerge on this full-bodied red. The concentrated palate also has finesse, offering dried cherry, licorice, cinnamon and pipe tobacco framed in fresh acidity and a backbone of firm but refined tannins. Drink 2017-2025!
