Rhone Vintage report from Wine Spctator

2016
99 Points!

This truly rare vintage is a new benchmark. The growing season was warm during the day but cool at night, with an unusually large diurnal swing that led to slow, even ripening across all varieties while maintaining acidity. Reds are laden with fruit, yet extremely racy and fresh in feel; whites are pure, brimming with energy

2015
97 Points!

Ideal spring conditions were followed by warm, dry weather through July and then heavy rains in August. Earlier-ripening Viognier and Syrah struggled a bit, while later-ripening Grenache and Mourvèdre excelled; reds are rich, ripe and full of powerful fruit. In the style of 2009 and 2007, with better definition!

Score: 91 Points!

"It is composed of 20% of the Chardonnay grape variety, for elegance and delicacy, 40% of Pinot Noir, for roundness and structure and 40% of Pinot Meunier for fruitiness. Pale gold in color, abundance of delicate bubbles. Floral aromas of fruit with subtle predominance of white fruits: pear, apple, almonds and hazelnuts. Fresh opening, smooth, pleasant and balanced."

"Ruby-red. Energetic, mineral-accented aromas of ripe red and dark berries, complicated by suggestions of incense and pungent flowers. Broad and fleshy on entry, then more taut in the midpalate, offering pliant black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suggestion of five-spice powder. Finishes very long and sweet, featuring slow-building tannins, a touch of smokiness and repeating red fruit character. This wine is shaping up to be an outstanding "basic" Châteauneuf."

"The same Grenache-dominated blend as the base cuvée, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes comes from older vines and is released solely for the US market. It’s a step up and is reminiscent of the 2010 with its depth, concentration, and purity. Black cherries, kirsch, licorice, and crushed rock notes all emerge from this ultra-fine, beautifully polished 2016 that does everything right. Don’t miss it."

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits more dark fruit than I would've expected, with black cherries, black olives and tar all mingling on the nose. In the mouth, the blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a lush, lingering finish. Easy to drink now, it should age for at least a decade just on its sheer concentration and ripeness!

This is a profound expression of grenache with brambly, red fruit wrapped in wild herbs and flowers. Fresh, yet deeply ripe and expressive. The really succulent, deep and fresh tannins are a feature. Power with elegance! Brilliant. Pure grenache on sandy soil, from three parcels of vines, aged between 80 and 100 years.!

Enticing, with bright, engaging raspberry, cherry and red currant fruit infused with gently roasted sandalwood and apple wood, garrigue and licorice root notes. A swath of tobacco underscores the finish, giving this an old-school hint!

Offers a gorgeous core, featuring flavors that show the distilled essence of raspberry and plum fruit. Seamless and pure, with a seductive mouthfeel despite the obvious weight and density. Flashes of anise, black tea and warm stone flitter through the refined and mouthwatering finish. So seductive, this is drinkable now. But just wait!

Chateau Pesquie

2010 Artemia

-Rhone Valley

Robert Parker

Score: 93 Points

The top cuvee from one of the benchmark estates in the Ventoux, the 2010 Cotes du Ventoux Artemia is a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah, with the Grenache coming from 80+-year-old vines and the Syrah from 50+-year-old vines. Aged 18 months in barrel, it offers a deep, rich and layered profile of blackberry, licorice, underbrush and ground herbs. Showing more chocolaty nuances with air, it's a serious, medium to full-bodied wine that has beautiful balance, a great mid-palate and fantastic length. Give it another year or two, and enjoy it over the following decade!

Score: 93 Points!

The 2016 Saint-Drézéry La Closerie du Pic is a blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah with the Grenache aged all in concrete tanks and the Syrah in new and once used French oak. This beauty offers killer notes of blueberries, blackberries, peppery herbs, earth, and graphite. Silky, full-bodied, with awesome purity of fruit, sweet tannin, and a great finish, it’s another great wine from this estate. It’s going to benefit from a year or two of bottle age and keep through 2026!

Not Yet Rated!

The bouquet is wide, has a blackberry fruit presence that is accompanied by soft violet airs, a cosy note of perfume, mild oaking. The fruit leaves a good, long trail. The attack is flamboyant, a real instant, forward affair, the palate juicy, bountiful, rolling well with its slightly spiced black fruits, the tannins on the finish clean and decisive. There is plenty to like here: it’s a wine with good heart and style, even flair!

Score: 92 Points!

The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is a bit less weighty and rich than the 2016 but equally attractive. Tangerine, orange and lime notes define this medium to full-bodied blend of Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, which finishes fresh, clean and zesty. Drink it over the next few years. !
